They say that because they think it is just like driving a regular car. But what they don't realize it how much it changes when you are driving 150 mph around 43 other cars.

About the only way that I can explain it is I once worked for this guy who felt that a sport was only a sport if there was a ball involved in it. He would go as far as saying that golf was a sport but not high school, college wrestling or Olympic wrestling was not. Track and field was not a sport.
I don't pay much mind to these people. I haven't race in a while but I did get a couple adult size go karts and we have a oval and a nice road course, and I want to tell you if you drive either one of these you choose all out trying to break your last lap time for the life time of the tank of gas you know you've done something. Now race someone at the sane time it is even more demanding.
But I love it.

I think some people feel that since THEY know how to "drive", that auto racing is nothing more than "driving fast". Fat chance of that being true. Car racing is a skill just like every other sport. Just because I can swing a golf club does not make me Tiger Woods. Just because I can swing a bat does not make me Hank Aaron. Let the naive among us continue to think that car racing involves no skill... we know better !!!!

Ignorance, plain and simple. The expertise required to be among the 40 or so individuals that take to the track every weekend in Nextel is tremendous. You don't just get there and last without a ton of skill. I think it's because people don't realize just how fast 190 mph is. if they did, they'd mess their pants. LOL. Peace.

Because they are too ignorant to learn about what it really takes to drive a car at those speeds with 43 other cars around you doing the same and stay focused for that many hours.

They think just because they drive everyday, it's exactly the same. It's like saying trying to hit a pitch thrown by a Major League pitcher is exactly the same as one thrown by a little leaguer.
