Probably for the same reason that scientist, teachers and educators roday still seek answers from the writings of early mathematics like the ancient Greeks. They discovered many facts about math which still hold true today. They developed geometry, trigonometry, and fractions that still serve as the base for mathematics today. The Mayans developed the concept of zero, the Arabs developed the principles of algebra.

When the Greeks developed them, they never dreamed that they would be used to send rockets into space, or to project moving pictures and sound all around the world. They never conceived of computers or the Internet.

But the math facts that they discovered thousands of years today are the scientific framework on which all those things re build.

People of those same generations all discover the fundamental moral and spiritual laws which have not changed any more than the math laws have changed. It is still morally wrong to murder. It is still morally wrong to steal. It is still morally right to care for others. It is still morally right to do to others as you would have them do to you.

Just as the math of the ancients serves as the fundamentals on which all modern science is build, so the scriptures serve as the fundamentals on which all moral and spritual understandings are build. The laws of math have not changed in the 21st century. We have just discovered new situation in which to apply them. So the laws of morality have not changed. We just have new situations in which to apply them.

When you study the ancient Greeks, you will discover that they knew many thing that were lost because their information was not passed on to other generations. They undertood that the world was a sphere, and had calculated its circumference with 1% of the correct number. They understand that all matter was made of tiny particles called "atoms". That the right mixture of these different elements would create anything. They understood the existence of air pressure and vacuums. They have many other discoveries that would be lost, and send the world into a "dark age" for a thousand years.

The same would happen if the moral laws and principles discovered and reaffrimed by "holy men" over thousands of years where to be lost. It would send the world into a "dark age" of morals through which mankind might not survive.
