Unless his name shows up on a child's birth certificate, I don't think they can track that. They do a pretty good search into their situations, criminal background, etc.
Are you trying to hide kids from someone? Just curious.

When you enlist, they will know everything about you. You get tested for drugs, you take a test, and go through numerous physical examinations. You talk to a recruiter first, and he tries to find out what is the best fit for you, unless you already know what you want to be. Based on your test scores, they try to fit you into the best job for you. You probably don't want to join the infantry if you have high test scores. Maybe something like Military Intelligence, something you can use when your time is up. Sure they do a background check, they can find all your info with your social security number. And your last four digits is what you go by in the military. How in depth depends on what job you want. If you're a tanker, they won't go too in depth, but if you want to move up in the government, they probably will have you get a security clearance. They will know everything about you, and no, they don't brainwash you, they teach you discipline.

background checks are conducted. But if the guy truly doesn't know, and there is nothing legal( say a birth certificate or child support order) that names him the father, than it is a moot point. as far as the military will be concerned, without proof or admission from the father, those kids don't exist and are not eligible for benefits nor would they hinder him from enlisting as a single parent
how thorough an investigation is done will depend on the level of security clearance they need.

If you were told how the Military investigates your background, you would be in on one of the top secrets of the gov. When I was being cleared for a top secret post with the state dept while in the military, the investigation came back with an incident that happened when I was 10 years old. They do what they do very well. If you have someting in your past, by all means let them know.

you will have someone investigate your background for sure. you will be required to give references and they go to the sheriff dept or local pd and do a criminal history check. there is a form for that but i don't remember the DD form number. they also send out an investigator whose sole job is to find out about you...they not only ask your references, but they ask those references of other people they could talk to, because lets face it...you're only gonna give references of those who will say the best about you.
anyway, the military doesn't care how many kiddos ya got.....but you will prolly have to get a waiver of some sort, especially if you have custody and are a single parent.
honesty is always the best policy. if you lie, they will find out and later on it could mean your security clearance being revoked. also, any false statements fall under federal law. i'd strongly suggest to be truthful.

Yes they do a background check. Your fingerprints are scanned and researched by the FBI. If you have outstanding warrants, you will be arrested. Atleast that is what I was told. It could just be a scare tactic to get you to 'fess up to anything you may have done.
You fill out paperwork with your family information.
If you have multiple children, why wouldn't you tell? Thats more money in your pocket!

Yes, they do a background check- well, you have to give them your social security number, so basically.... if you lie about how many dependents you have they can/ will find out about it. The enlistment process is long, which gives the government plenty of time to do backgrounds checks on you, and by the way... lying about anything, any step of the way in your enlistment is a federal offense, so I wouldn't recommend it.

One important thing to consider is that you will be required to support all of your children while in the military. Another thing you may want to consider is that if you get caught breaking any laws on the basis of your answers you will not simply be kicked out of the military. You may be sent to military prison first, and then kicked out.

Local police and national FBI checks, depending on if the job requires a security clearance, they will go further in depth. Interview family, friends, credit check, etc
