I found my dog, the one my previous question was about. I read one of the answers I got that I should walk out the door walk back in and see if he's come back out, and it gave me an idea. I walked out the door, rang the door bell and heard him bark. I kept ringing the door bell so I could figure out where the bark was coming from. He was in my fathers room. He must have gotten in there when I went into the bathroom to take a shower this morning. What is it about door bells that makes dogs go crazy?

someone once told me dogs feel emotions 100X stronger than us and thats why they seem so crazy and get anxious in the car and stuff.

You think "Hmm, someones at the door. I wonder who that could be?"
Your dog thinks "Doorbell? DOORBELL?! that means... SOMEONES AT THE DOOR! SOMEONES AT THE DOOR! WOOF WOOF SOMEONES AT THE DOOR, SOMEONES GONNA COME THROUGH THAT DOOR AND INTO MY HOUSE. THROUGH THE DOOR!!! WOOF WOOF WOOF, COULD BE THE POSTMAN, WOOF WOOF, COULD BE THE KIDS FROM NEXT DOOR, WOOF WOOF, THEY MIGHT HAVE A TENNIS BALL, WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF, I LOVE EATING CAT POO, WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF..." and so on.

The dog has learned that the door bell means people coming and that puts him into an excited state. If the dog has never heard a door bell, they won't act like that. My dogs had never heard a door bell until we moved to this new house. Only knocking. They did not respond to the doorbell until they learned that it was the same as a knock.

I wish I knew. Ours goes nuts, too. I've had to stop watching Game Show Network, because she goes crazy with all the different bells and whistles going off!

All I can figure is that they somehow instinctively know that it's an indication that a stranger is at the door, and they go into guard mode, as they wish to protect the family (pack)

It's a loud noise that they can't nail down the source of, they're barking as a challenge.
