Mostly windows is put on laptops these days but you can get other one's on there if you want. Linux or Unix can be put on your laptop. Mac OS X x86 can be put on a laptop but you need to have special hardware and know what you are doing in order to do this. You can put BeOS on your computer or Inferno or Plan 9. You can put ReactOS on your computer.

The only one I'm aware of is the Tablet edition of WinXP, which is specifically for tablet computers. They're essentially laptops with a swivel display and touch screen capabilities. Other than that, laptops can run any edition of WinXP provided they meet hardware requirements.

MacOS and the various flavors of Unix can be installed on laptops as well.

Apple tends to change the MAC OS X software to fit the computers hardware devices. Which in my opinion is great, that way you won't have a slow choppy expierence. It's designed around the hardware which gives you a great smooth experience.
