Getting 2 Fell Terrier pups but work full time - any tips? I know the owners and the puppies parents are both outdoor dogs who they show in competitions. Both parents have a great temperament and have been kept outdoors since they were puppies also - there have not been any behavioural problems. Our pups will be kept outside during the day and will sleep in the house at night.

My partner and I work 9-5 but have plenty of quality time on evenings and weekends to take them out (we like long walks in the country), take them to puppy training and socialisation classes and have a very large garden where we intend to build a 'doggy house' and run where the dogs would be kept during the day. There is also the possibility that one or another of my siblings would be able to pop in during the day and spend a little time with them. I was just looking for advice really on what else I could be doing?

Thanks

Sounds to me like you have things worked out pretty well. As long as you spend time socializing and working with them, I think your plan is fine. One thing you might have a concern iwht is the two dogs bonding closely to each other, and not as closely with you. Can you and your partner each take one out seperately from the other? That might help avoid this, or nip it in the bud if it should occur, which it might not.

It sounds like you've really considered it and have everything in place that you need. The only other thing I could suggest would be to put a radio in the doggy house for a bit of company.

I work full time and have 2 dogs, although mine stay in the house, someone pops in around lunchtime to let them out and make a bit if a fuss of them, and I leave the TV on for them. Its just background noise, the vet recommended it years ago and it works a treat.

Sounds like you got it planned out. If you go to the pet store, look for a doggy fountain. It is a water resivoir that hooks directly to the outside faucet and the dogs will be able to get fresh cool water any time. There are alot of different varieties, so shop around or check the internet. Also make sure you get them proper flea/tick protection, because you don't want those to come into your house at night. Last just make sure you socialize with them as much as possible. Just like kids, get them on a routine.

By the sounds of it you have covered every angle all i would say is make sure the dogs do not get the behaviour of barking alot as you will have some very distraught neighbours, terriers are renowned for yapping.

Perhaps having someone come over or yourselves at lunch to play with them or walk them. It's a very long time for any puppy & the longer you leave two puppies together, the stronger the bond between them is & the weaker your bond with either of them will be.

Don't get puppies if there isn't somebody at home. If you speak to ANY dog rehomer they will try to disuade you and if you try to adopt a dog from, say, Battersea Dog's Home and you both work full time you will not get one...

Recommendation? Get three Rats! They are very sociable creatures and when you have three they keep each other company so if you handle one then the other two will keep each other company.

Well it sounds like you have looked into this, but I would say to anyone who works full time, do not get a dog,{ sorry }
