When struck by the sudden realisation of one's size in the universe, is it just a common human emotional reaction to freak out, under which circumstances you would try desperately to console yourself, even with lies about there being something more powerful than the universe that cares for you? How did you feel when you arrived at this sudden realisation and what belief system or lack thereof do you possess now as a result? Be honest.

I'd just like like to point out that my own reaction was "Wow!", which is why I'm so interested in subjects like Philosophy and the sciences.

Never had that, but I do understand it, to a point. Sometimes it is difficult to keep up with the barrage of new knowledge on a daily basis, and I could see the temptation to just say, "I can't take it anymore! I'll just accept whatever I'm told and ignore the absurdities, just so I don't have to think anymore!"
I'm a non-believer because I never want to surrender myself like that - might as well be dead.

"Faith" of the type you are asking about is a result of several things, as explained very nicely by Sigmund Freud in "The Future of an Illusion." There is the wish to feel special, as you have described. There is a desire to influence what cannot be influenced, like weather and good hunting. There is a wish for a sort of "big brother" who can beat up on people who weren't nice to you so you can get even. It all comes down to wishing, that is, to trying to evade reality.

well it is such a pittiful question.human beings are actually very desperate in conquering the universe where in actually, his ability is very limited and the more he wishes for more he himself gets samller and tinier and everything will tell him from the single speck of dust to the whole world we live in and whatever is above it and beneath it proves that we are only human and sombody has undoubtedly created us.unless we accept that truth we can never have faith. And it is only through the knowledge of truth that one can experience faith, because faith is learned and practiced, nither one can come into being witout the other. Faith can never be inheritted it is learned and practiced.

It is a surprised positive reaction of coming to knowing. But it is actually THE HOLY SPIRIT who gives that inspiration of a surprised knowledge. These men given such inspirations by THE HOLY SPIRIT are chosen ones among natural men. They are 10% of the world's populations or any sector of society for that matter. They are the disciples of the Prophets and Saints and are the 1st fruits offered by the Prophets and Saints to THE LORD GOD or the 1st to be adopted to the family of the 1stborn in heaven (the prophets and saints) among natural men. Their spirits were created from the gold dust and silver dust of the Earth; while the spirits of the natural men were created from the ordinary dust of the earth but they are the2nd born. On one hand, the spirits of the Prophets and Saints were created from the precious stones from heaven and instead of having an AAAAAHHH, they receive revelations from dreams or visions. THANKS GOD; FEAR GOD; PRAISE GOD; GLORIFY GOD; HONOR GOD; LOVE GOD AND WORSHIP GOD. Pls visit my website-THEGOODNEWSOFTHEKINGDOM@yahoogroups.com

as an atheist, I don't try to console myself, I just accept the fact that I'm just a diminutive dot in the perspective of all things. Also, with that 90% of the universe is unaccounted for , what I really think about most is my place in the world instead.

That's pretty profound really. I think you've got it, exactly. It can also be a reaction to "ahhhhhh! my loved one died" and "ahhhhh, I'm so confused."
Usually, when Christians tell me why they're Christians, it's because of your reaction tho. It's to do with "my mind can't understand it, so there MUST be a god!" Yes, it worked on me for years (well, and my parents indoctrinated me in it). As I grew older, I learned more about the mechanics of things and the "ahhhh" stayed, but god left.

not a real lot
think on/in your [mine] body live a million micro beasts
we [our flesh body ] is a whole universe of life
indeed without the micro beasts living in and on us we would die
go smaller see an atom with its orbiting electron ,
see the atom as a sun the electron, as a planet [earth]
such as is the planet your [we ] are living on [now]
see trillions of ''earths ''just in your body
see the uni verse for what it is
but a few cells of all that is god/good/grace /living eternal love

The law is "NOT OF FAITH": Galatians 3:12
Whatsoever is "not of faith" is sin: Romans 14:23
Sin has "death sting", which the law is "strength" of.
So then law = "strong man" to first bind, to spoil sin.
http://www.godshew.org/BiblicalDots.htm
http://www.godshew.org/Law.htm
Law is "both good and evil": obviously ends "evil".
Grace is good only, never evil, which ends "good".
http://www.godshew.org/TwoGods.htm
http://www.godshew.org/Potentate.htm
Which (law/grace) things are an "allegory" & "mystery".
http://www.godshew.org/Allegory.htm
So begin your "faith"-->hope-->charity with "Grace",
OR else bend over, dble kiss divided @ss bye bye.

The GRACE of our Lord Jesus Christ WITH YOU ALL. AMEN.
