I heard once that many many centuries ago there was a female Pope who was married and even had children in the Vatican. Also that is was common for priests to marry and have children. Is this true? If so what happened?

There is a legend of Pope Joan that has little or no documentation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_Joan

With love in Christ.

Pope Joan is a legend, now not historic reality. There has in no way been a feminine pope, and till the Catholic Church makes it possible for ladies to be monks and, therefore lead congregations, it'll in no way receive a girl to guide all of Catholicism.

No female popes in that religion ever and no female in any place in the church except for nuns. In the past though the popes would have affairs and several children the whole system was very corrupt but this was back in the middle ages.

There was a History Channel documentary about her. Very very interesting. I do not believe she was married, although she did have one child.

Wait, it wasn't the History Channel it was done by ABC News' Diane Sawyer. There was a funny part about a hidden chair that was once used to hmmmm check that future popes were male. There are a couple of books on it. At least a couple.
