Hey all, I'm 17 and an Indian living in Malaysia. I have graduated high school. My passport says "ECNR granted to the passport holder till he/she attains 18 years of age and provided he/she is accompanied by any or both parents." I have to fly alone to India this week. What issues will I have regarding the current ECR status? What can be done to obtain the ECNR status? Any help will be appreciated, thanks in advance!

Inbound passengers coming to India doesn’t require the emigration clearance. So, in your case ECNR status is not applicable. You can freely travel to India alone.

Since you are a minor you cannot apply for the ECNR status now (it is valid till the age of 18 years). You have to wait another year to avail this facility. Either you can apply to the passport office in India or the Indian consulate/embassy in Malaysia. The requirement is attested copy of your educational certificate (matriculation or above) and the relevant application form.

All the best.

Read Guidelines with application form. If you have proper documents, you are elible for ECNR. All get ECR.
