I go to a local store to buy stuff, and I pay the cashier & get the change. Then I put the coins & notes into my wallet and leave; this process takes just about five seconds. But this is where I felt kinda bad - usually the cashier, after handing over the receipt with change, waits for me to put everything in place and set myself before leaving. But today, this cashier gave me the change and said "can you move?" and he was waving his hands signaling me to move.

I felt bad because almost all cashiers I've met have been very patient and courteous with me, i.e. they wait for me till I get set - except this guy.

What is your opinion on this? Was the cashier being rude to me?

Yes that was rude. It is expected that you have a 1/2 minute or so to put your change and receipt away.

I was a cashier for a few months at a local Dollar General Store. It's not the best place to work at.. and i hated going to work everyday.. but I was never rude to any of my customers. If you really felt offended by this... tell the manager. You might get this person in trouble, but when you apply for a job, you fill out a questionaire... and it asks you about personality and such. This person is obviously not skilled in the people communication department and needs to be retrained. He might have had a bad day, or was trying to get all of his customers rang up so that he can go finish his other side work that is required.. but that is no excuse for how he acted. I am a server now, and even when I get bad service, I write the server a note on how he/she can improve. Everyone needs help once in a while, and for you to speak up next time he does this, it will dawn on him his attitude that he is projecting to paid customers.

Why certainly he was rude, Mav. A clear asshole. I take my time at the cashier & put everything where it belongs. If they wanna give me a pile of money & the receipt, I tell the cashier to put the receipt in the bag. Then I proceed to put the greenbacks in my wallet & the coins in my pocket. If I drop a coin, too bad. Nobody has said a word to me over the years. Sometimes I even give the receipt a look for errors. It's our right to take our time & nobody's going to rush ME. If someone ever has any sass or lip service, tell them to slow it down.

Yeah, I think it was rude. Especially because I know you were trying to do everything as fast as possible, with respect for the people behind you. The cashier must have been in a bad mood that day!

Yes he was rude. It really is everyones responsibility to complain when you get bad service. If enough people did this then maybe some change for the better would happen. If the employee gets in to trouble that's not your fault. He has no one to blame but himself. Yes we all have "bad days" but it does not help matters to take it out on customers. Consider this, if he really felt sorry for his actions he would have apologized to you, but he didn't. As for you, I would suggest that yes you may have been only putting your money etc away, but I would do this while walking away from the line. Just a suggestion.

Incredibly rude!! But there seems to be no such thing as customer service anymore; they seem to think anymore that they're doing us a favor by being there, and they'll get to us when they get to us.

I wouldn't complain this first time, but I would certainly ask to speak to the manager if it happens again.

I think I would have continued to take the time I needed to put my things away before walking away, giving him a "You gotta be kidding" look all the while (and possibly taking a wee bit longer than actually necessary).

I think the cashier was being rude. At the very least they need to give you time to put away your change or receipt in the check book, put it away, and collect your purchases. It's ridiculous. At some stores after they've bagged my purchases, I have to reach over to where they've bagged them and pick them up instead of having them handed to me. I guess they don't realize that if we really wanted to, we could order everything through the internet.

Yes, he was rude....however, he was probably having a bad day and his job may feel meaningless, underpaid, and he must deal with countless rude (not you) customers on any given day. There is no one person who doesn't have an off day in any field. We're only human. Don't feel bad. If I felt bad about bad about all the poor customer service I've had over the years I'd probably feel miserable all the time.

Yes, you shouldv'e told him to calm down a bit. Twenty seconds or so longer wouldn't have caused a catastrophe. Some of these cashiers think the customer is an attachement to the wire basket or trolley, to be trundled off out of the way!

hes either an asshole all the time, or he was havign a bad day. you think about his situation. hes trying to support himself and perhaps a girlfriend/wife and kids on a grocery mans salery. i would think thats sort of stressful especially since i have plenty of $ yet i still get sort of stressed out over texs, bills, etc. yes, thats no doubt rude. but you should give him the benefit of the doubt and just think hes having a bad day. theres a lunch lady at my school whos always a ***** to me for forgetiing my card sometimes and i get sort of angery back. just like in your situation where someone who has done nothing but be rude, you felll like slapping. after seeing her late one night working a second job, i felt terribly sorry for her and regreting the small gestures i made to her. i mean you werent exacly at a fine dining place. then i would agree 100% that the person who was rude was a jerk. just have some sympahy for those in a stressful enviorment. as well as expect the best of them. remember, no1s a complete asshole.
