It's like the no spanking kids in some places - some people don't know where the boundaries are or how to look after their kids, so they make blanket rules.
Some people breed them for fighting only, and some have no idea what the breed needs in terms of excersize, then wonder why their dog bites people. So again they make blanket rules, and apply them
I love pittbulls, and cannot wait till I have the space to own a few.

Because people refuse to accept the truth about their breed. Because people act ignorant when it comes to responsibility and because they repeat the same mantra all the time.
This situation will never be fixed unless all pit bull type of dog owners start realizing that they own a dog bred for a specific reason and that reason was to fight. As social as they can be, pits can also be raised and trained to do serious prtection work as well, I have seen it done and trained a few in sport. It is the people that keep denying that ability that get the breed into further trouble. Lawmakers look at the dog from a different angle and all they see is a dog that is capable of a lot of damage and destruction. While all breeds are capable of doing damage to a person, pits are especiall y good at it because they have the "heart", the gameness that made them so popular among serious dog enthusiasts years a go. The same quality that made a dog famous is now killing it because people are refusing to see it like it is. What a shame for a great dog.

I don't know why they are banned, but I guess that they have gotten a lot of bad press like Dobermanns and Rotweilers. Those breeds are just so loyal some times. I sympathize with you. I'm glad that where I live no kind of animal is banned, including ferrets and chinchillas.
In California, ferrets are banned because a certain organization refuses to admit they were wrong about ferrets being vicious biters.
I really understand you. A girl I knew had a Rotweiler and he was really sweet. They poisoned her dog and almost any other pet that she had. They considered them dangerous.
Best of Luck, and have a nice day! :o)

Yes, Pit Bulls and other " vicious " dogs become vicious because of the way you treat them. On the Island where I come from your not allowed to have
" vicious " like Pit Bulls and Rot Weilers unless you have a completely closed yard and your absolutley sure that your dog cannot jump over it.
We got this vicious dog list in the news paper that said that the following are vicious:
Pit Bulls
Rot Weilers
Dogo Argentino's
Filla Brazilero
Dober Man
Bull Dog
I don't agree with all of the dogs on this list you know ( that their vivious ), but it's a law.
By the way the reason they came up with this law was because in a short period of time 4 people got bit and one of them a 4 year old died.

While some are banned because they are perceived as dangerous animals, some areas may have bans that are the result of a side effect of fight breeding: Abandoned dogs.
People will get a dog because they think it is 'cool', or fashionable. Some will breed a fighter and when it loses leave it by the side of the road.
Pets are not a flavor of the day, pets are for life. Many of these bans are to protect the animals and not just people.

It's their reputation. Most people that ban the pitt or talk mean about it have never owned one. They are the most loving, loyal dog you could ever own. My 4 year old twins (grandchildren) fall asleep watching cartoons laying on their pittbull. He is extremely protective of them. Once you raise a pitt and see what type of dog it is, you won't want any other. We have raised them for over 20 years. Have a nice day.

because people a dumb= its easyer to ban dogs then fix the problem. because to fix the problem you should (1 pass a law that says you must be 21 to own a dog over 20 pounds..(2 pass a law that you cant own a dog over 20 pound if your mentally ill or a felon. and make it mandatory that you take and pass a class on dog behavor. like guns or car.

Because of ignorant people and legislation. Punish the people who deliberately breed aggressive dogs purposely and punish the people who train their dog to be vicious. Get to the root of the problem -- PEOPLE!

Because they can be intimidating. Looks and reputation can account for a lot.
And lets face it, when a pitbull DOES go bad, it really goes bad! They can do a lot of damage if they want to.
I'm on your side, though. I have two very sweet and loving pitbulls.
