I was wanting to make some bird toys myself. Does anyone know of some bird safe products that I could buy at any regular store to make them. The toys are for my 2 cockatiels that love toys that will make noise (like bells) and also with anything they can chew on.

I love to make my own bird toys too. As you may have seen the ones in a Pet Store are very expensive. I will either order the parts I need or I may go to a Yard Sale and buy baby rattles and other safe small baby toys. But I have a link where you can buy all your own stuff and since you would be ordering in bulk you can make a bunch of toys. Some people even make extra and sell the on Ebay.

Check out the link I posted below, you wont be disappointed.

I always make my own toys. With all the birds I own, I don't have the money to buy all those expensive bird toys at $20 each! One of my birds' favorite toys is just taking some jute or 100% white cotton string and putting some beads on it and tying knots in the string. Also, I get cheap, uncolored rawhide (from the dog section) and drill holes in it and string it on some chain and put some bells (I get those cheap right after christmas at walmart) on the chain. Papertowel tubes are also great for birds to tear into shreds. You can find other toys on my website http://www.cockatootrainer.com/toys/
If you know of any other favorite toys that your birds like, let me know andI can probably help you think of some cheap toys to make out of it.

edit: I just remembered another favorite; I peel an orange, lemon, and other citrus fruits, dry the peels and poke a hole through them and string them up in the cage. It's fun for them to chew on, tastes good, and is basically free!

The thing you have to remember is no "toxic" chemicals. Leather products are bad because the use tanning ingredients that are poison. Some wood products have hazardous chemicals used to make the layers of the wood. Also some wood products are "treated" to prevent decay and insects. Paint contains chemicals that are toxic to our birds also. Be careful when making your own toys, and don't buy toys that are made overseas because they say one thing and do the "other." (Several examples in the media lately.)

I go to a pet store and buy materials specifically for the toys I make. I use colored food dye (non-toxic) to color them, and use only high quality chains and Stainless Steel wire to combine them. (I have 9 Macaws so I go through toys like crazy :)

There is web sites that sell these products like Dr.s Foster and Smith that are high quality and cost reasonable. You can order the parts and make them yourself.

Cool! You know what I've used for my tiels?

OLD jewelry. SHINY jewelry. Costume rings (with things too big for them to swallow)

I know you can get bags of old hideous stuff that they will just love at the thrift store for a $1.00 or so.

Also, I've used those shiny ball garlands (for christmas trees). They like to hang on them and spin and have a good ol' time!

Believe it or not, they just like paper, too. I buy this stuff called "shred it" and tie it to the sides of the cage or on extra perches. It's good for a good time!

AND, they love to tear up my decorative wood sticks (darn them!) lol.

Goodluck! Your birds are lucky to have someone so interested in them.
