At one, who really needs to worry about health? How about a cake made out of zucchini bread made like a carrot cake? Or even a carrot cake. Muffins also make good cakes. If you give a kid a slice of cake, they'll eat it all, if you give a kid a cup cake, they might. Chances are, they eat just the top part with the frosting and toss the cake. Also, you don't need to pile on the frosting, spread it thin and keep it simple. Another good idea is an Angel food cake. It's made with egg whites, very little calories and low in sugars.

a 1 year old... I will be facing this in about 3 months...

Lets face it, they cant do much so cake wise, something simple, not too rich, I would suggest a fruit flan thing as its flan (sponge base) is like cake but lighter, the fruit is healthy and junior should be able to easily help themselves.

No creams, milk unless they are full cooked, same with eggs (eg, Ice Cream is made from eggs)
No with the sugar thing as that makes them real Hyper!

We were very good with our baby, not letting her have any chocolate or crisps for the first year. But we decided her first birthday would be the ideal time to treat her to her first taste of chocolate cake. She loved it! Plus we got great pictures of her with chocolate all over her face.

I guess though if you really do want to keep away from chocolate, try a carrot cake.

Oh just let her have a normal one, its ok to be unhealthy if its only occasionally!

Word of warning though, the colouring in icing can affect the colour of the nappy the next day - my daughter ate a green thunderbird cake at a friends party and her poo was lime green the next day. Very freaky.

I'd go for the non-healthy cake option I'm afraid!
You can make the other party food healthy though,
grapes, carrot sticks, raisins though :o)

Any homemade cake is better than a shop bought one no preservatives etc - but forget healthy - she'll only have one birthday a year!! let her have some fun!

This cake is actually made with baby food and is really moist and yummy. I have other favorites, but this one doesn't have extra spices that may not be good for babies.

Baby Food Cake

INGREDIENTS
3 eggs
2 cups white sugar
1 1/4 cups vegetable oil
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 (2.5 ounce) jar applesauce baby food
1 (2.5 ounce) jar carrot baby food
1 (2.5 ounce) jar apricot baby food
DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9x13 inch pan.
In a medium bowl, stir together the eggs, sugar, and oil. Combine the flour baking soda and salt, stir into the egg mixture. Finally, stir in the baby food. Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
Bake for 25 to 30 minutes in the preheated oven, until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cool and frost with your favorite cream cheese frosting.
