One of the exercises I do is to do a half press-up, then move back onto my knees with my arms forwards to stretch my back, and then to move forwards into a press-up position again. I repeat this several times, but every time I move forward into the press up position there is a loud click in the small of my back, and I can feel it too. It doesn't hurt, but I am worried that I might be doing some damage. My back also clicks when I lie on my back and raise my right leg, but it doesn't click when i raise my left leg.

Does anyone out there know about backs? Should I stop worrying or should I see an osteopath or something?

I am living abroad at the moment, so it is difficult for me to get to see anyone.

The clicking is typical of people with moderately tight muscles in the neck or back.

When the muscles are very tight, there is no clicking, but restricted movement and often problems like bulging discs and nerve pain.

When the muscles are free, there is freedom of movement and no clicking.

If you want to get rid of the clicking and avoid problems in the future, get one of the somatic training programs that reset muscular tension toward normal and improve movement. I'd recommend the program, "Free Yourself from Back Pain," for which a preview is available by sending email to back2@somatics.com. This is an electronic download.

Manipulative methods like massage and chiropractic don't reset muscular tensions and so are usually only temporarily effective.

There are articles at somatics.com/page4.htm for a better understanding.

May be you should change your exercise, I have severe back problems that I have over come through understanding how not to irritate problem areas.
May I suggest that your back is ever so slightly out of plumb.
So I suggest this, lay on your back before you exercise then do back peddling if your back clicks whilst doing this this is an indicator that your back is misaligned continue back peddling until clicking reduces.
If you want an exercise that is light but very good for the breathing and nearly all muscles then I suggest that you take a tennis ball find someplace where you can bounce it.
Sounds silly eh, but bounce it about five hundred times each hand taking in in turns the higher you bouce it the more areobic then as you progress bend your knees more and more so that you can squat and bounce, this streches the back and strengthens the tummy hands and arms without adding weight. good for the derrier. Have an ex ray of your back to see for your self what the problem is before you spend money on osteopaths From what I am reading you have a slight missalignment you can also try rolling a towel place it under your belly when you lay on it the get some one not to heavy to gently apply preasure to the very lower back for about half an hour .
The reason it s clickng is because two of the vertebrae are touching but ease off the exercise that causes clicking you will take to face off the bones

It's fine. It's just like when people click there knuckles except it's your back. I "click" my back sometimes when my back hurts and i talked to my physiotherapist about it and he said it wasn't harmful to my body and all the rumours about getting arthritis were completely false.

Don't be worried it's fine.
Hope this helps

Clicking is perfectly normal, as long as you have no pain there is nothing to worry about. My body clicks all over whenever I exercise it has been like that for a few years now, must be getting old or something!
