I'm writing a story and i need to know, if a person was deployed into vietnam in 1959 or 1960 what would be a valid reason they would send him home only a few months later? Also what would be a reason that someone didnt see much action in the war? Can you name a specific location that soldiers may have been deployed where there wasn't much combat? if you have the answer i chose as best, would you mind sending me an e mail, if yours isn't listed so i could ask you follow up questions?

okay - thats already good to know. so i should make the date a little later - maybe 65. that might be a time when more soldiers were deployed.

thanks mike for your reasons. i dont want the character to be physically or mentally unhealthy, so maybe compasionate leave. would that include if his entire unit was anniliated except maybe a few of them? would they send him home then?

If he was sent home after a few months, there could be a few reasons.

Section 9'd - Declared mentally unfit for duty.
Invalided - Declared physically unfit for duty.
Dishonourably discharged - Being 'Fired'.
Compasionate leave - Being send home due to a death in the family.

edit - Discharged due to underage also.

EDIT - If his parents were killed and he had a minor as a brother, they would let him have compasionate leave.

We had advisers in Vietnam in 1959-60, but there wasn't much combat there at that time. It was a very small contingent, with representation by all services.

Our advisers would likely have seen assignments in the major cities of South Vietnam, Saigon, Da Nang, Nha Trang, Pleiku, Hue, Da Lat, etc. They could have been in the field from any of these locations.

South Vietnam's ports include Saigon, Cam Ranh, Nha Trang and Da Nang. Other important cities include Pleiku, Hue, Da Lat.

Military centers could have been in all of these areas, but probably were concentrated in Saigon and Da Nang.

59 or 60? there weren't many soldiers there other than 'advisors.'
