I wouldn't even consider installing Vista unless of course you are a complete idiot. If your Windows is working right now, then why would you want to spend hours upon hours trying to figure out why half your programs and hardware don't work with Vista?
Do yourself a favor and stick with what works for now and then in a year or two, maybe consider the switch to Vista..

Vista is new, so there are some compatibility issues with it- mostly device drivers. Some programs that ran under XP don't run under Vista, but most do.

Vista runs slower than Windows XP on all hardware and requires more system RAM to function. It's generally not worth it to upgrade- if your computer came with Vista you're probably ok.

If you really want to switch to Vista, I recommend waiting 6 months or so- until Microsoft releases the first Vista service pack to fix some of the outstanding problems.

DO NOT INSTALL VISTA!!!

I have XP desktop and my new notebook came with Vista. I am having all kinds of problems including IE7, so I exclusively use firefox. I cannot use my laser printer from the Vista machine because driver is not available for Vista and manufacturer do not intend to make one.

Give it at least 2 years for MS to get their acts together.

no, you can still run programs running in XP. But some games don't install well in vista.
