Last year my son (then 13) started getting an allowance. We give him 20 bucks a month and 10 of that has to go into a fund that he can't get money out of. ( Made him talk to the investment counselor at the bank and get a REAL investment account )

Most of his money sits in a bank account getting interest, but when he wants a new DvD or game, we hit the bank and he feels the sting of taking out his money. He's only allowed to keep 5 dollars in cash on hand.

Then again he does earn his keep quite well with yard work and washing the floors.

I'm 19 and have never gotten an allowance... I never got what i wanted all the time either... you don't need to give a child an allowance... giving them food to eat, a roof over their heads, and clothes to wear is allowance enough... but that is just my opinion... like i said, i never had one and i grew up just fine. I know the value of a dollar, and use them wisely...

Hah!
It depends on their ages. My kids are under 7 and not interested in having their own money. When they are older I might give them money if they do their chores and then they can buy their own clothes and thei will teach themthe value of money. Clothes aren't getting cheaper.
As a guide a dollar per year of age sounds good for pocket money.

LOL, try sam's club, you might find some saving there. Otherwise, get a piggy bank. Give it to your son and have him drop your spare change in there. This way if your broke say to him, you had to rob the piggy bank. LOL

Are they doing chores to earn an allowance? when we were growing up we had 2 chores per day + cleaning our rooms and we received $5.00 per week.

Don't give them cash.. make sure you only give them food stamps..
And if you don't have food stamps check with your neighbors, chances are these days someone will have some.
when the hit 18 you can raise it to a dollar
