Generally, you don't.

I am assuming that by "audio file", you mean a digital recording like WAV, MP3, OGG, and so on. You have to understand that while they are both music, the representation is completely different.

MIDI is basically a bunch of notes and an instrument number. The player knows what each instrument sounds like, so that's why MID files are so small. It contains nothing on the instruments themselves. It's like handing a musician sheet music, and say "play this song, will you?"

Whereas a digital recording records EVERY SOUND that happens, which means in addition to the instrument sounds and such, you also get breathing, background noise, and all that. Well, it's a... faithful recording!

You don't turn a recording into sheet music without a LOT of work. You have to separate out the instruments, then score each instrument separately,

There are some software out there that can do it to short sound files, but they are experimental and the output's fidelity is questionable.

Perhaps if you explain WHY you'd want to convert it, we can give you better suggestions.

That's a pretty tough thing to do. It is a lot of work. You need to separate the individual instruments or voices into solos and you need to have a variable sampler so it doesn't put in two half notes when one note will do. I am aware of only one software that will convert .wav into .midi and it's Linux. Otherwise, you need to "program" the .midi file yourself using a note editor, a .midi instrument or a .midi program.

No problems going .midi to .wav. That is a simple conversion.
