For target shooting you can't go wrong with a .22LR especially with the price of ammo going up, it's also good for small game and with birds using bird shot. Gun wise I would suggest a Ruger 1022.

I have done a lot of targeting, and hunting with a .22lr and have had a lot of sucess. It will take down any small game animal there is including birds. I also have a 17hmr and it works great too, but the old 22 is hard to beat. It is quite, accurate, and cheep to shoot. you can also get all kinds of ammo for a .22, including 22 short, 22 long, bird shot, and so on, but the regular 22 long works great for everything. Good shooting

I learned to shoot on a Marlin Model 60 semi-auto chambered for 22LR. Whole generations of shooters have learned on this thing. It is relatively cheap, starting at around 130$ for the basic blued barrel with walnut stock, and the only drawback is the tubular magazine, because it takes a little while longer to load it. Having said that, it is a simple, cheap little gun, and if you take care of it, you could give it to your grandkids one day. (The one I learned to shoot on was my father's when he was about 11). It is pretty quiet, but if you want a touch more power, you could go for the .17 HMR, or the .22 Magnum.

cant beat a 22 for small game and target plinking plus you can get a brick of ammo (550 rounds) for about 10 bucks... not bad considering if you bought a box of high power rifle ammo it would run you around 20 bucks a box and they only have 20 rounds in them.... plus a 22 is the perfect weapon for anything up to somthing the size of a fox....ive killed deer with a 22 but only because it had CWD.... anyways a 22 teaches you great marksmanship skills plus its cheap to shoot realitivley quiet.. and makes a great all around small game rifle.... plus their cheap guns to buy

You can get both a .22lr rifle and a 12 or 20 guage shotgun for under $200 apiece. Then you will have a good gun for each situation.

A .22 is a good one for target shooting but for birds a 20ga shotgun is a good choice.

.17 HMR its very accurate and has the power you need for hunting. Use a 22 just for plinking.

Here is the perfect rifle for you. It's an H&R single shot 22 rifle, that comes with a .410 shotgun barrel that you can very easily change.
