I'll be going for a campus tour and i'll be driving from ozone park, queens. I believe I can get on the long island expressway pretty quickly from where I live...so about how long do you think it'll take with medium to heavy traffic?

It's going to take you at least 90 minutes
Dont go up to the LIE
Either A-follow mapquests directions by using Belt Parkway Southern State Sagtikos Sunken Meadow Norrthern state rt 347 nichols rd
Or you can use plan B which will add 13 miles but over half of it will be guaranteed no traffic
Mapquest this:
OzonePark > Atlantic Beach>Point Lookout>Oak Beach >Stony Brook
To avoid long beach traffic stay on beech st until NY ave- the end of the commercial district-
Right on NY ave
Left on broadway-all the way to the end
Left on maple
Right at the light on Lido Blvd
Except for some of the trip down rockaway blvd this whole route will move and rather quickly at times

My sister attended the medical school at Stony. For a semester she commuted in from Forest Hills in Queens (not far from where you are in Ozone Park). She budgets 1.5 hours for the drive out there, because sometimes in the morning the traffic can be real heavy on the LIE or Grand Central Parkway.

After a semester she said the hell with the commute and rented an apartment in Ronkonkoma. :-P

According to Google, it is 56 miles from Manhattan to Stony Brook. Depending on traffic, that could be anywhere from an hour to three hours. If you are coming from somewhere else in New York City -- then it could be more (from The Bronx or Staten Island) or less (from Queens or Brooklyn).
