This type question actually comes up amongst professional hunters on gun forums like www.accuratereloading.com believe it or not.
For a 45 you can draw a comparison to killing elephant that one bullet in the right place will still kill them, however the problem is a 45 being a handgun has very poor penetration compared to a rifle on big game.
It cannot reach the heart from front on, cannot penetrate the elephants skull and cannot break its spine or shoulders which are other common hunting targets.
Eye shots will blind it if you can hit the eye and it is standing still but they do not lead in a straight line to the brain anyway so you will not kill it, just piss it off.
What can be done is if you sneak close enough you can fire a lot of 45 handgun bullets between an elephants ribs into its lungs and chest. The only problem is it will still take a while to kill it, during which time it has plenty of time to stomp you.
Poachers do this with uzi'9mms and ride around in a jeep until the elephant finally bleeds out.
As to the TREX of roughly the same size as an elephant you have the same problems. Even worse since it would probably not let you get as close anyway....
A 45 handgun however might have a chance with a brain shot from side on if the trex is standing very still, since a Trex skull, like most reptiles has a lot of open spaces in it.(check out pics or a museum) and is not more solid bone like mammals skulls are.
If that little brains position could be predicted from a certain angle and once again if you could get close enough you might be able to drop the beast with one well placed shot.
If that does not work and it charges, like with an elephant, you will not be able to fire enough 45 cal bullets to save you, even from an automatic machine gun.
Dinner time.

How many bullets will it take to "sedate" a Tyrannosaurus Rex using a standard .45 caliber handgun??? The standard .45 acp, or the .45 Long Colt?
It can't be done with the .45 acp and is probably 'iffy' with the .45 Long Colt. Standard .45 acp fires a 230 grain bullet at approx. 850 feet per second with 369 ft. lbs. of energy. Even a 'hot' .45 acp is still only about 1,100 ft. per second with some 400 ft. lbs. of energy. The T-Rex was:
Length - 40 feet (12.4 m) long
Height - 15 to 20 feet (4.6 to 6 m) tall
Weight - 5 to 7 tons
AND it was covered with scales, which means the standard .45 acp would fail to penetrate. Even if it stood still long enough for a Thompson submachine with a 50 round drum to be jammed into its mouth the .45 acp lacks the potential energy to drop a T-Rex.
You'd stand a better chance with a carbine in .45 Long Colt, but I'd still prefer somthing with a bit more 'umph' in the order of the larger Nitro Express double rifles designed for dangerous game.

LOL. I have to assume a 45acp going in to a T-REX is going to be like a splinter to the rest of us. SO i am thinking how many splinters to take to kill me??
lol well i guess i would want about 150 of the new drum mags for the 1911 colts that hold 50 rounds.. And with one of the long hunting barrels you can get from sportsmensguide on the gun for a litte extra power...
can i have about 10 people to hold all the extra ammo and then about another 20 people to act as bait since we have to get so close... 50 (bullets)round drums 150 of them is about = 7500 bullets... lets hope not that much maybe 4000 rounds.. I think i could take about a 3000 or so splinters

You picked a good caliber to lessen the pain and suffering if a rex bites you in two; just stick it in your mouth and pull the trigger. Those things were just an eating machine with a PMS type temper and a brain the size of a pea. You could hit it with a Bazooka and it still wouldn't stop swallowing you.

Sorry, wouldn't try it with a handgun unless it was a .50.
I'd choose a .50 cal sniper rifle with a slap round. The bullet makes impact and then fires a dart at 4000fps to penetrate armor.

lol stanford when i saw this question i got my .45 out and went into the backyard to see for myself. I gave the t rex 10 bucks to stand still and found that the answer is exactly 2046 bullets.

Speaking from experience.... (I have killed 7 T Rex's) I killed my first one when i was only 3... I would say 1 good shot right between the legs to bring him down then you have to go in for the close work with your bowie knife... just hop up on him and stay away from his little short arms because he packs a heck of a full nelson... anyway just finish him off with the knife and thats that.... if you really want to make it fun hunt em with sticks or try to catch em with your bare hands by roping them and ridin em till youve wore em out...... thats the fun way
