I am using a Sony Cyber-shot H2 and have automatic as well as manual control.

on tripod, low to the ground no flash of course, increase sensitivity. a bit of a trail of light adds to the photo. try to include a bit of the sky at dusk and leave the shutter open long enough to expose the background. later you can enhance the color of the firefly in photoshop and make it stand out. just try a lot of pics - great pics always take time.

Have night vision google from a local gunshop and lit a fire, almost certainly flies will come flying. There's your flies! One buy one ask them for a photo shoot cos you wouldnt like an angry fly buzzing at you(was it a bee whos buzzinG? What does flies do? flyzzing!yeah!)

adjust your shutter speed and work on your reaction skills, cause those will probably be pretty hard to catch, for a good shot.
