I make sure that the litter is about 3 inches high.
I scoop out the clumps from the litter (don't flush down the toilet).
I only refill if the litter is less than 2.5 inches high.
You don't need to throw the entire litter in the garbage. I personally wash the litter box once I finish a 7kg litter product.
People who change the whole entire litter in a week or so are those who do not have the time to go and scoop out the clumps right after the kitty has used it. Therefore, the "poo and pee" clumps have been sitting in the litter for a long time.

Scoop out all that is not litter. If it is the clumping cat litter, double bag it in those plastic bags from the grocery stores & throw in garbage; NOT toilet. We use the cheap clay litter which does not clump, so we toss the poop into the toilet. Everytime I go to the bathroom, I scoop the pan if anything in it; litter pan scooper frequently. Since the pee will not clump in clay litter and can't be tossed in garbage, we change the litter & plastic liner once a week (on garbage night).
Change litter about once a week or at least the night before their owners come home.

It depends on how long it's been there, and how gross the litter is. I do a complete litter change every week and a half or so. I clean it religiously everyday. And if the litter gets low I add some in. Use your judgement but don't overfill the box. Scoop out whatever excriment is in there regularly and if it needs it, add some more in. Depending on how long you're cat-sitting for, you could dump the litter out, clean the box, soap and water, if they don't have a particular product to clean it with, and put fresh litter in.

I doubt she is playing. I had a female cat that had obsessive compulsive order with digging to find a spot to go to the bathroom as well as burying it for a long time. I would get a litter box with a cover which would alleviate the amount that she throws out of the box.

If you are caring for 2 or more cats then the litter must be cleaned every day. Are they using ''clumping litter or just the cheap stuff or the natural pine stuff? none the less it should be cleaned every day so the cats don't get sick, they can get very sick if they are walking in dirty litter cause as you know a cat licks it's entire body to clean itself and if they have dirty litter in their paws, they ingest it and could become very, very ill, so keep it cleaned every day.

I scoop the litter box 3 times, then change it jsut to be safe. Cat have ammonia in there urine and it's unhealthy to keep it around for a long time. Even unsoiled peices of litter have the chemicals on them.

You should be able to scoop the clumps of waste out. If you do this diligently, you won't have any odor. When you can see that the box is getting a bit low, just add more litter.

Scoop the poo and pee out with a shovel thingy. If the litter it'self is really dirty you can change the whole thing.
