My department rankings are as follows:
Chief
Assistant Chief
Captain
Lieutenant
Sergeant
Senior Police Officer
Police Officer
Note: In my department the differentiation between a Senior Police Officer and regular Police Officer is in name only. A Senior Police Officer has no rank over a regular officer.

This is going to vary some between police departments, some places have patrolmen, patrolmen 1st class, and so on. The general idea for law enforcement is a follows.
1.Officer, Private, or Patrolman
2.Corporal
3.Sergeant
4.(Some times you might find a SGT. 1st Class in here too, like the shift commander) Usually a dective holds at least a Sgt. rank as well but will be classed in this area for pay scale puropses.
5.Lt. 1st and 2nd
6.Captain
7.Chief

1)These patches are not officially "military" ranks, they are simply symbols of authority, respect, and power that are well known for being used in the military. 2)Police departments are basically just a branch of the military, they stand in formation, march, have ranks, and other procedures that they follow. The police academy uses the Marines' boot-camp techniques to do their training.

My department went from Chief, Asst Chief, 2nd Asst Chief, Sergeant, Corporal, Patrolman. They have since dropped the assistant Chief and Corporals.
Used to have Lieutenants but they were a tested position. If you want to stack your department favorably for the Chief or Mayor, you change the Lieutenants jobs to Chief and then they are Politically appointed so they can hire whoever will do their bidding. Sergeant currently is the highest tested position you can obtain on my old PD
