Cochran? I just wanted to know, since I'm part Irish, and that would be my last name still, if my mom wouldnt have gotten married, I just wanted to see if anyone from my family in Europe was on here, b/c I've never met them before. By the way, I live in America, and I'm coming to Europe this month.

A word of advice to you Orla C:
I dont care if you're tired of people asking this, I didnt ask YOU personally, and if you were so tired of this why would you even bother clicking on the damn question?

Have a quick look at www.familysearch.com and www.rootsweb.com, you will find lots of people who share your surname, not all will be related but some just might be, I grew up curious about my own surname and as a result have had contact with people around the world. just look.

Cochran, or Cochrane is an Irish name, not too many living in the South of Ireland as far as I can see. Another name Corcoran (both sound similar) is quite popular in the South West. A large drinks -Non alco! distributor, Cantrell&Cochrane (C&C) are very well known here also! It helps if you have some idea of where your Mom's ancestors came from in the Country.

Cochran is most likely Irish, but it occurs in Britain too. Please don't take this the wrong way, but only an American would ask if there's anyone in Europe with such-and-such a name :-).

A word of advice: We are SO TIRED of being told that my Mum/Grandma/Grandpa/hamster is from Dublin and their name is O'Brien and have I heard of them. We really don't care! Neither would you if every European you met said they had a cousin in Wherever, did you know them?

If you want to find out where your relatives are located, go to the phone book at www.goldenpages.ie and see where they are concentrated.

It is a very popular surname in the republic of Ireland. The further south you go the more popular it becomes.

One basic thing in genealogy to learn is that everyone with the same last name IS NOT RELATED. Changing your name won't change who your ancestors are/were. Your ancestors will always be who they were...and if you do actual research, they may turn out to be from somewhere else entirely.
The only way to know who your relatives really are, is to research your family, and find actual records.
