Which brands are good, what to look for, metal or wood frame, styles (L-shape - good or bad, loft), etc.

They are 2.5 years apart in age.

I'm still a few years out, my oldest is 3 and the youngest is 5 months, I just wanted to get a general idea before I start researching it. Time will fly in, and before I know it, I'll be needing those beds!

If they are always going to share a room, then go for the L-shape. If not, get plain old bunkbeds that can be used later as twin beds.
I got plain ones for my boys, and they have used them both ways. I like wood, but go with your room style. The brand I have went out of business.
Cautions:
Don't put kids in top bunk, even with a bar, until at least six years old.
Don't buy a ladder - get the kind where you climb up on the side! [ all the injuries my sisters and I got from bunk beds were caused by the ladder - black eyes, broken tail bone! ]
Get a good mattress for their growing backs!

With L-shaped ones...you always get one kid standing on the other's bed to get into his.

Wood has fewer serious injuries because it gives where metal does not.

The ones that have a futon on the bottom is good if they use the futon as a sofa during the day for games and such.

But find out what THEY like. It would make them happier if they had some say in this decision.
