What's the quickest public transport route? I'm applying for grad school at Seton Hall and plan to commute.

thddspc is right when he says it is a long commute but he is off when he says that the F goes nowhere near Penn Station.

The F train stops at 34th St/6th Avenue. That is one avenue away from 34th St/7th Avenue where Penn Station is.

The tram to 59th St won't help much because you will have to walk over to at least 3rd Avenue to catch the subway (N, R or W). Take the N, R or W to 34th St/Broadway (which is adjacent to the F train station) and then walk over to 7th Avenue and Penn station.

Service from Penn Station is very limited as South Orange station is on the Morris & Essex line which is based out of Hoboken, NJ. You would have to take a train to Secaucus Junction and then go downstairs for a M & E line train (there is a transfer fee at Secaucus Junction).

You can get a bus at Newark Penn station though.

OY, that's a long commute..

You would have to make your way to Penn Station in Manhattan, then take an NJ Transit train to South Orange, then walk over to the Seton Hall campus (about half a mile walk).

The worst part would be getting from Roosevelt Island to Penn Station.. The F-train subway goes nowhere near Penn so you need to change trains like 3 times.. Ditto if you take the tram to 59th Street.

The commute can take 1.5+ hours total.

It might be a better idea to live on-campus or an apartment nearby.

EDITED TO ADD: NJ Transit does have plenty of direct trains from NY Penn to South Orange. Check their schedule here: http://www.njtransit.com/sf_tr_schedules.jsp?action=entry&resptype=U&MinB=0&MinA=0&Fare=Y&Line=&LineDesc=&LineLookup=&LineExt=&LineExt2=&STime=12%3A00+PM&RTime=1%3A00+PM&Oloc=New+York+Penn+Station&OSID=105+++++&Dloc=South+Orange&DSID=140+++++&back=sf_tr_schedules.shtml&ori=105+++++%3ANew+York+Penn+Station&des=140+++++%3ASouth+Orange&DOW=W&mm=7&dd=6&yyyy=2007&date=7%2F6%2F2007

That's almost 1 train every hour.
