I can't really answer WHY it happens, but I can say I totally know what you're saying. Both of my ex girlfriends were previous girlfriends of my friends (close ones too). Maybe it's because you share many ideals with your friends and you're attracted to similar people. Sometimes people just want to be on the same playing field as their friends, so they want to date the same people to achieve that (especially if they feel inferior to begin with). Also, maybe your friends hang out with your significant other while you're dating them so much that they develop a friend relationship at first and then after you break up they upgrade to a romantic relationship. One other possibility is that the availability of potential suitors is low in a given area, so a friend's ex is one of only a few people deemed relationship material. Lastly, maybe people see their friend's relationship and see that it's a good relationship and that the gf/bf is a good partner, so they swoop in later on to also experience the good relationship aspects of that partner. Hopefully people don't hurt their friends' feelings by going out with their ex's. There must be a grace period after a break-up, especially if it was a long relationship. Dating a friend's ex doesn't have to be as taboo as everyone makes it to be. If it was a very serious relationship, and if you're good friends, then maybe it's off-limits. However, if either one isn't true, then maybe, just maybe, it can work. Sometimes you just can't stop love.
Attraction is such an interesting topic. Good question.

Because you are friends you share the same tastes, so the ex is your type already and then you find out this person is available. Also it was forbidden fruit before and now it is possible, makes this person even more attractive in that way.
Personally I'm not into that at all. I came out of a long term thing and the only available women I knew were my ex's friends and my friend's ex's. And the innocent phone calls started. But it seems icky and incestuous to me, can't go there, don't want to have the mental image of my new girlfriend getting hosed by my good buddy.

there may be alot of reasons why this happens...
maybe stuff like this:
-bff was really in love with ex
-bff might think that reason they broke up was because bff's bff like their ex

Most likely they see how you are with you bf...and if the guy broke up with you, they notice how stupid he was for leaving a great girl..
