During the season of springtime, when the rāsa dance was going on, suddenly Kṛṣṇa disappeared from the scene, indicating that He wanted to be alone with Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī.
Kṛṣṇa was sitting in a solitary bush, waiting for Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī to pass by. But while He was searching, the gopīs arrived there, like a phalanx of soldiers.
"Just see!" the gopīs said, seeing Kṛṣṇa from a distant place. "Here within a bush is Kṛṣṇa, the son of Nanda Mahārāja."
As soon as Kṛṣṇa saw all the gopīs, He was struck with emotion. Thus He could not hide Himself, and out of fear He became motionless.
Kṛṣṇa assumed His four-armed Nārāyaṇa form and sat there. When all the gopīs came, they looked at Him and spoke as follows.
: "He is not Kṛṣṇa! He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Nārāyaṇa." After saying this, they offered obeisances and the following respectful prayers.

"O Lord Nārāyaṇa, we offer our respectful obeisances unto You. Kindly be merciful to us. Give us the association of Kṛṣṇa and thus vanquish our lamentation."
After saying this and offering obeisances, all the gopīs dispersed. Then Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī came and appeared before Lord Kṛṣṇa.
When Lord Kṛṣṇa saw Rādhārāṇī, He wanted to maintain the four-armed form to joke with Her.
In front of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī, Śrī Kṛṣṇa had to hide the two extra arms. He tried His best to keep four arms before Her, but He was completely unable to do so.

Question:: Why was he unable to keep four arms before Her?

Hare Krishna. This incident is to show the special position of Radharani among the gopis. The gopis are attached to the two handed form of Syamasundara. For them, the four handed form is God, and they dont consider Krsna as God, but just their lover. So when they saw Narayana, they just paid respects and moved on. The love Krsna has for Radharani is so strong, that He cannot maintain His Godly form in front of Her. he simply likes to satisfy Radharani and so changed back to two handed form. Although Krsna loves all the gopis very much, Radha is even special among them. Thats what this pastime illustrates.

I guess that Radha -because a true devotee knew Krishna completely. She knew that Krishna is but Narayana himself.
its a guess.I didnt know about this story.
Hare Krishna
edit-I think that God is unable to hide himself from the devotee though he does try that. When love is too much Lord does try to hide too from the devotee but alas he hasnt any choice

When Srimati Radhika was arriving after the other gopis had left that place, the breeze that had just touched Her veil carried so much fragrance from Her body that it entered the nostril of Krsna and He thought, "Oh, My most beloved is near." He forgot that He was supposed to maintainHis four-handed form, and He could no longer hide His original form. Two hands disappeared at once, entering His body, and His original two-armed form reappeared – with His flute in His hands and His peacock feather atop His head.

"At the beginning of the rasa dance, Lord Krsna hid Himself ina grove just to have fun. When the gopis came, their eyes resembling those of deer, by His sharp intelligence He exhibited His beautiful four-armed form to hide Himself. But when Srimati Radharani came there, Krsna could not maintain His four arms in Her presence. This is the wonderful glory of Her love." (a quotation from the Ujjvala-nilamani by Srila Rupa Gosvami, as quoted in Sri Caitanya-caritamrta Adi 17.293)

It is believed that Krishna is the Purusha and the Radha is the Prakriti the Maya. These two are inseparable and one at the same. There is nothing new that can be shown to other which is new.

As krishna's love towards radharani is true and pure, He could not hide it from her even for a joke or for a play.
Or as radharani's love is true towards krishna. He is shown the truth of him. krishna could not even do that play for a joke.
