disappointing and yellowish and small.

I was far more impressed with the other paintings in the Louvre.

When I was there John the Baptist was next to her , looking like he was giving her a rude gesture.

It's on a much lesser scale than I imagined and looks as though it's the final cover for a canvass that's been painted over at least once before. The texture is thick. The strokes are fine and the colours seem to have something very rich about them although they are not vibrant by any stretch of the imagination. That to me is what I find curious. I don't know how to describe that aspect. I am not an artist so could not truly appreciate the painting from an artist's perspective. I tried not to let it's history and myth affect my point of view and go "Ooooh ... ahhhh ... 'THE' Mona Lisa. I saw it from a very uneducated perspective but I must say, I much prefer the real thing to this huge honking piece I'd imagined all these years. I assumed it would be one of those massive 3'X4' oil and canvass jobs. And here it was this quaint and unobtrusive much smaller "gem". Maybe that's part of the magic. I don't know.

I too was a little disappointed. It is such an icon in the art of Western Civilization and I guess the build up is more than any one painting can live up to. I think it would be a different situation if you could actually get up next to the painting and look at it awhile. However, the crush of the crowd and the noise level makes it hard to do anything but push your way in and push your way out. I'd like to have a chance to sit for a few minutes and just study it a bit. It would probably change my opinion of the experience a bit.

I didn't go into the Louvre, that was a big deal for me to not go in once I was there, I thought I should, so I kinda apply to answer, but I stayed outside by the fountain just hangin with locals rolling up our pants and dipping our feet in the water then I read in some of davinci's notes to not study art of the past, study your own present time and what's around you so now I'm kinda glad I didn't go and get disappointed as so many indicate here - it does look small by that picture

Locked up and hidden from sight by a box and tourists. It wasn't disappointing...it was a culture shock. I never imagined I would have to look at her like this. It felt like visiting a friend in jail.

Very representative pic (not mine)
