The Bible allows for there to have been more than just Adam and Eve on the Earth at the time. In the latter part of Genesis 5:3, it says that Adam became father to sons and daughters, meaning that there were others besides Cain, Abel and Seth that were not mentioned specifically by name. Adam and Eve did not have Seth until Adam was 130 years old, so it is quite possible that any of these could have produced children and even grandchildren by the time Cain murdered Abel.

Adam and Even had many other children. It does not state that Cain and Abel are their only children. In fact, there could have been many children before these two. We know that Seth, the third son of Adam and Eve that is mentioned, was born after Adam had already lived 130 years. Cain could have been born when Adam was 100 years old for all we know and the pair could have had 50 children already and those children would have had children and so on and so on. These would be the other people the verse is talking about.

This is really a question about faith. You have faith that the sun will come up everyday, right? I always believed that Adam and Eve had more children and was stumped on the same details that you have been. I think you have to really digest Genesis and combine it with what you do know. But faith is an important aspect of everything, including the Bible. I don't think there is a wacky explaination for this, but a choice to believe the Bible with an open heart and mind. If you discount what it says because a section doesn't make sense to you, then it is possible to lose an important aspect of being a human being...the ability to have faith. You will find that even the Evolutionist has faith in what is believed.
I would suggest that you read several versions of the Bible before you discount anything. Good luck!

Adam and Eve may have had hundreds or thousands of children besides Cain, Abel and Seth. This should answer those questions. Adam and Eve where the first two humans directly involved in the creation of mankind. They were allowed at that time to populate the earth with their children. The children up to some point had to marry and mate with their brothers and sisters, in order to populate the world. That practice did stop however when God deemed it necessary. The practice of brothers marrying direct sisters eventually became forbidden. God had caused the DNA of mankind to change in the fact that the practice would cause problems for the children born of this behavior. Don't forget Eve came from Adam in the form of the rib. God did however give Eve a set of DNA along with the DNA she received from Adam. The DNA in your body is from your mother and your father. It is also from you great,gr,gr, gr, gr, gr, gr grandfather/mother for the last six thousand years or so to Adam and Eve also. I know that what I read from the Holy Bible is true and I live by that. I would never turn my back on God and not believe. God loves and created all of us because he truly loves us, including you.

Sometimes the Bible doesn't mention every. single. kid. that was born. They assume you know that obviously Adam and Eve had more kids after Cain and Abel. So yes Cain and his other brothers married their sisters. They had to populate the earth somehow! Or really we wouldn't be here. And that would be sad.

Genesis 4:17 And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.
Cain's wife obviously was one of Adam's later daughters (see Genesis 5:4) Immediately after the verse you question, there begin geneologic records indicating the ages and the number of sons and daughters of these early people.
Obviously, since God made Adam and Eve spiritually AND GENETICALLY PERFECT, (and since they were genetically NEARLY perfect with their children, close relatives married without genetical damage. Abraham married his half sister) before they fell into sin, their bodies were designed to last forever, and their lifespans were much longer prior to the Flood......If you keep reading after Genesis 4:17, God shortened our life spans due to our own wickedness. Genesis 6:5 states that...."every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually." This is one of the strongest statements in the Bible about the depravity of man and how lost and mixed up you are without knowing Christ.
Yes, I unhesitatingly believe the Holy Bible and I read and study it on a daily basis. It is our Instruction Manual from God.

There's no way that every single bit of history and every detail could be written in the Bible since it covers time since the beginning of creation. Just because it doesnt name every human being on earth doesnt mean that there weren't any other people.
Also, many parts of the Bible are not to be taken literally. To determine whether or not a part is to be taken literally you need to consider who the author was, what their purpose of writing was, the time and society in which they wrote and other factors.
And, yes i do believe what I read in that book.
What's up with all these people on here trying to disprove religious beliefs. This is a Q & A section for honest people seeking understanding not people questioning if Christians really believe what they read in the Bible. Of course they believe what they read in the Bible. Christianity is based on Christ and his teachings which are in "that book"

Just because the Bible only mentions Cain and Abel (and later Seth) doesn't mean they didn't have a lot of other children.
