Good question!
Most people see God as an ogre on the hill waiting to pounce on anyone who screws up. That's what they see because that's what they know because that's what the god of this world (II Cor 4:4) does, so when they hear of the true God they atribute to him the charictor of the only god they know.

Actually I dont..I attribute everything to just nature.
Only insurance companies really believe in "acts of God" because its on thier agenda to deny your claim.
Also some of the most awesome things in the world today stemmed from some disaster. Like the Grand Canyon.

Dear drew,
i think as you pointed out people's worldview really matter. i can't say that i ever attribute anything to mother nature or mother earth, but i guess it's an alternative way for someone to refer to a creator without identifying the creator as God.
i think calling things an act of God- is a way of further blaming God and by painting an inaccurate picture of God as cruel and wrathful is a reason to not follow him.
But worldview matters- because if you believe in God the Creator than it helps in realizing that God loves His creation and has a plan for it and each individual.
Kindly,
Nickster

I suppose its complicated.
In some religions, there is a goddess (mother earth) and there is a god. the goddess is represented by the moon, shes the mother of all things. she brings life. people forget that she can also bring death.
death can be a beautiful thing, too. however you want to look at it...whether you decide to believe if there is life after death.
i guess people like to see mother nature as being beautiful and loving. and god is supposed to be powerful and wrathful.
whenever people do bad things, they are guilty and need something to say that it was recognized and they can move on.
you can look at it through so many different windows, and get tons of different views.

I attribute everything to Mother Nature. When something is beautiful, then she is in a good mood, when there is a disaster, then she is very mad.

LOL...I never noticed that. I think it is because we tend to associate things of force with men and things of gentle beauty (such as new life/plant/etc) with women. If you ask some Pagans, they'll say it's an act of goddess though. :-) Also, there is mother earth to some Pagans, but for others it is the green man.

Because people think that God is punishing them with natural disasters and want to blame God for things but don't understand it is us that is actually destroying the earth ourselves and our ways of destroying the earth it fights back with weather.

I do contribute everything to God. I haven't even thought of the term "mother nature" since the commercial with the lady saying "It's not nice to fool Mother Nature (insert evil laugh)"!
p.s. what was that commercial?
edit: queen--insurance companies always pay out on acts of God! They are in your policy, windstorm, hail, tornado, flood....
