I think it just has everything to do with hitting the jackpot in the DNA lottery. However, I've been told that we are created in His likeness, which probably proves that beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder.

I assume you are talking about outward physical beauty. How we look on the outside is determined by our parents and genetics. I have met some physically beautiful people who were the ugliest people I've ever known. And I have also met some people who are "plain" on the outside but their Spirits were so sweet. Also, beauty isn't always a blessing. Some beautiful women find it very hard to be taken seriously in anything.

Prior to mortal birth, we lived as spirit children of our Heavenly Father. To help us achieve our potential, he prepared this earth with conditions such that we could better develop an understanding of right and wrong.
To illustrate, consider that I tell my children why lying is wrong. I hope they'll understand and obey, but they will probably gain additional insight as they experience what happens when a relationship is damaged through dishonesty.
Earth life is designed to allow competing "truths" and to allow people to make both good and bad decisions to help us develop an understanding of the true principles of happiness through our own experience.
Each of us has lessons to learn and opportunities to teach others. I suspect beauty can be a blessing or a trial or both for the person who has it, and those around them.
Regardless, earth life is a great privilege and blessing to those who take advantage of the opportunities afforded.

Beauty is culturally defined, therefore not real. However, the appearance of good health and the signs of suitability for reproductive purposes seem to be universally agreed to across cultures. Looking like a heroin-addicted runway model or Barbie doll-Nicole Smiths are the constructions of the cultural, economic, and power elites feeding their fantasies. The question is; why do we buy into them? Why are we not creating our own definition of beauty? Replacing the sick corporate produced version - illusions-delusion and constructing our own reality of what beauty is? "Beauty" is an industry geared to make us feel sub-human unless we purchase the "right" product to make us socially acceptable "real" people. Again, to what extent are we defining ourselves by others' delusions?

"Beauty" is in the eye of the observer. And there is no such thing as a god, not one who cares about us mere mortals anyway. Beauty is by no means the greatest of blessings, because beauty is not synonymous with happiness.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I see beauty in the heart. From this standard, it is up to the individual how beautiful he or she is. I have been told to smile, it makes so much difference. It is true, but it is in the smiling of the heart.

Besides all of the "...in the eye of the beholder...." stuff, I also think that beauty and plainness effect the challenges God places before us. While plainness can be a challenge, so can beautify. Do you let you beauty effect how you interact with others? Does one allow beauty to cause them to be conceited? God places challenges of many sorts in front of us and it is up to us to meet the challenge.
The same can be said of wealth and poverty. how you deal with the individual challenge is how you please God (and yourself).

We all have our beautiful parts and our ugly parts. Some are just on the outside.

I'm not sure why, but I'm glad that God looks upon the heart to judge who is beautiful.
