I think calling a person any name is offensive. How would you like it if people called you a psycho?

I can see a couple teenage boy friends calling each other that, just like they might call each other some other bad names.

Psycho is usually used to label a person who has extremely unusual and negative behaviors. It's short for psychopath, a person with no empathy for others and no remorse. Obviously, those folks can be nasty to be around. That term has been changed to sociopath nowadays, because people get it mixed up with psychosis or psychotic, which is when people hear or believe things that aren't there, usually a symptom of such mental illnesses as schizophrenia, major depression, and bipolar disorder. Most of these folks never harm anyone, there is no fear factor there.

So I personally, as a person with bipolar disorder, would prefer that the term were just not used anymore. Somehow it tars people with mental illness when it's really sociopaths you are talking about, people who SHOULD be avoided.

A long answer! Hope you learned something.

In our family we always joke around and call each other psycho. But I suppose others might find it offensive. Our saying around here is "If you're crazy and you know you're crazy then you're sane, if you're crazy and don't know you're crazy then you are insane."

This is what you would say ABOUT a person who is behaving badly, or who is acting as if he is out of his mind.
I would not call a person this to their face. If you are correct in your assessment, you may just become their next target.

It depends on the tone of voice you're using.

Personally, I take it as a compliment, haha!

As for me, I usually go around calling my family and friends bastards... I know it sounds bad, but I use it almost as a sign of affection.

Yeah --- pretty twisted! lol :D
