I am a US citizen. Can I just use my drivers license, social security card, and vehicle registration? Or do we need birth certificates?

Its not crossing the border into Canada that is hard.. its coming back into the US. This is changing on a daily basis as they extend new regulations that require passports for all people, Citizens and non citizens. As of today regular ID will sufice for surface crossing. Tomorrow, Who knows?

On October 4, 2006, the U.S. Government extended the deadline for Guests to obtain passports for sea travel to the Caribbean, including the Bahamas and Mexico. The deadline is now expected to be as early as January 2008. Please note, however, that recent legislative changes may permit an even later deadline depending on whether certain requirements are in place by January 1, 2008.

For air travel, however, the deadline is January 23, 2007. This means that all travelers, including U.S. Citizens* and all foreign nationals, traveling to the United States by air on or after January 23, 2007, such as Guests flying to Orlando, Florida from Canada, are still required to carry a valid passport after the effective date.

This is from a Disney site and gives you an idea how screwed up everything is. Check with customs for up to date info. Just to be safe.
PS; Get your passport. It is something you should have anyway and you won't have to worry about stuff like this.

If going by air:
Since Jan. 2007, you need a passport but until Sept. 30, 2007,
proof of application for a passport + govt-issued photo ID will be accepted.

By land or water, until regulations change (probably in 2009)
U.S. passport OR
proof of citizenship (birth certificate, certificate of citizenship or naturalization)
AND photo ID (such as current driver's license)
