I used to have to change my work schedule every three days from working a swing shift 3pm - 11pm to 11 pm - 6 am. I kept my sanity by staying awake the last night of a swing until around 5 then off to bed. It took getting used to but working at night definitely is taxing on the mind and body! Get out while you can!

You need to switch your bio clock to reverse. Sleep day and work at night.
If you start on a Monday night and have the week end off, stay up as late and as long as you can, so you get supper tired.
Then about noon or so go to your bed, close all blinds and lights to make it as dark as possible. You might try a relaxing tape or repeating CD. If you are married or have a live in partner sex helps a lot.
When you get home, stay up as long as you can till noon or so then go to bed. If you are lucky staying on the same shift shift for at least a month or more. The worst and hardest thing on your physical/mental health is switching shifts frequently.
I worked most of my military last 6yrs on the Midnight to 7am shift. Then most of my last 15yrs on my civil service jobs. I still often stay up late at night or early morning. Good Luck.

The best way to adjust to working a night shift after working days for a long period of time, is to practice staying up during the hours that you will be working during the days you are off. Therefore when yo go to those hours your body will be adjusted to them and you will sleep when you get off. After about a week or two you should be fully adjusted. I did it when I worked split shifts and going from days to nights.
