A psychologist did a study on this very subject. There was a lot of information to sift through but it came down to the following.

There is 30 years between young and old and the observer is right in the middle of that span.

In other words a person 15 years younger than you are would be considered young while a person 15 years old would be considered old.

At 15, 30 is old. I'm almost 60 and consider 45 to be young but 70 not yet old.

Think about some of your friends and family members. I think it works very well. I see accuracy at least 80% of the time.

My parents are in their 80's and have just celebrated their 63 wedding Anniversary. They are planning their next cruise to Greece next year when my brother celebrates his 25th wedding ann. They are both still active in their churches and in several organizations that they are interested in. They both have hobbies that keep them busy if the other one isn't' around and they have a circle of friends. They have some friends from when they first got married and some from before they were married. They have five children still living and eight grandchildren. I hope that when I'm that age in 30 years that I"m still that active and involved with my life. I think that one grows old when one gives up on life and thinks that one no longer has any thing to live for., that can happen at any age especially if ones friends and family have predeceased them.

Never, actually the mind / brain does the opposite: you don't actually "grow old" but rather "revert" back to childish ways once your brain cells gradually deteriorate.
Think about it, when you were a new born your brain cells are just developing and continues to develop into adulthood: learning new things / skills, speaking / communicating, etc.
It reaches it's peak at somewhere between a person's mid-life, then gradually dwindles back down until amnesia / alzeihmers sets in.
Any who, personally, I'd consder someone old when they seem to "revert" back to childlike ways. The age at which this happens varies amongst people.

Depends - I have known people in their 40's who I consider 'old' because they have had a difficult life. On average, I consider old to be any over 75. This number keeps changing for me, though, because as my family members get older and I see that they are still looking good/healthy I reevaluate what I think is 'old'.

just because a person goes bald or the hair turns white doesn't mean that they are old. i know people in their 60's that can out work or run or any thing psychical than most of today's generation of people. old is when a person can not take care of themselves. some people are old at 40 and others go into their 90s and still physically fit. so it becomes a relative term.

When I get up in the morning I think I am in my early thirtys until I look in the mirror. Then I look every day of my 70 years. As the kids would say....."Its not fair!"

I have to keep reminding myself that I am old. Someone will make a comment and I think when I get that old, maybe. Then I realize I am that old!!

You're old when you feel old. I'm only 23 but there are days when I take a look at 16 year olds and say "oh god, I hope I wasn't that stupid when I was their age." That was when I started feeling old, but in a good way, because it just shows me that I'm wiser and better.

This is a good question.
When you are young...(teens)
Everyone over 30 is like a dinosaur...
But once you hit your mid 20's all that changes!!
I think now OLD is really what the person does at the
age they are.
If you feel old, you are old...if you feel young you are young!!
But to give a number....at this point in my life I feel it is 60 and over.
But as I get older Im sure that will change.
(as of now Im 27)
