Wouldn't it be cool if they raced factory equipped cars again?

I just loved it when a 4500 pound stock Pontiac Tempest was in the field with a Chevy Belair and a Plymouth Fury. Surely the same speeds were not attained, but the excitement was much greater. Also it bolstered competition among the carmakers. Now it's mpg and which one can run longer on corn or cow poop.

THe gas crunch of the 70's shifted the thought of stockcars. They went from the large Detroit iron to prefab cars that resembled cars from the factories to pressed out cars that look alike except for manufactures stickers, head light stickers and window shapes.
No stock cars will never be "stockcars" from the manufacturers again.

Stock cars from manufacturers aren't safe enough to race today. Certainly not at the speeds attained now, compared to the past. All race cars have become far more sophisticated than any mass produced automobile could ever be.

The closets you can get to the kind of racing you seek is GT racing. These are actually cars you can buy and drive on the street, albeit terribly expensive cars, equipped for racing to protect the driver in the event of a crash.

I disagree the era of the restrictor plate and fake stock cars is as much fun as the past. I think the COT concept is very disappointing. Having a field of identical cars means drivers will be more aggressive and possibly reckless vs. relying on innovation and new technology to give then an edge.

I want to see real racing come back to the tracks, all of them From F1 to dirt.

There is no way they could compete with STOCK cars. First of all they would have to make safety improvements to the cars or else crashes would be more dangerous than ever. Second they would have to change the gears so they could last 500 miles at a big track like the one they are on this week. 3rd they all have different aerodynamics and all have different horsepower...

From what I can tell here is what you have:
1. Impala - 242 HP
2. Fusion - 221 HP
3. Avenger -155 HP
4. Camery - 158 HP (4 cylinder)
Obviously something would have to be done here, because I for one am not going to watch cars like that go around the track when I can see the same thing at my local track on Saturday nights... Or on the way to the track, or on the way back, or... whenever I look out the door!

I think nascar is doing great the way it is. There are places that race STOCK cars like that... just not on national TV... It would be hard to sell that...

That stopped around 1972. Stock cars as delivered would be boring to drive and watch. I see that on the freeway every day.

Racing now is as good as it ever has been, more competitive and more action to watch. The new fans are just used to whining IMO and don't know what it was like before.

You sure got my vote. Nascar is out of control. No wait... way too much in control.
