Chis can be a nippy breed. The first thing I would do is neuter the dog unless you are planning on breeding him. The next thing is to not baby him or let him become the dominant member of the pack. You are going to have to discipline him in language he can understand. He is a dog. You are going to have to tell him in dog language that you are the packleader, and he isn't. Make him stay on the floor. Make him move away from possession so you can have them. Make him wait to eat. Stare him down until he moves away. And force him to lie down in front of you even if you have to hold him. Hold him down and growl at him if you have to. Don't show fear at his snarls. You just have to take charge. Babying small dogs is the main reason they become so dominant.

Well, if you were his size, see how safe you felt. Everyone and everything is so much larger than him. My chihuahua does the same thing when I startle him while he's sleeping. Luckily, he's not big, and has never done any damage. Put him down? It's not like he's a pitbull. He's not capable of being fatal. Little dogs are very insecure sometimes, if they have been taught to fear the world by being stepped on, kicked, hit, even yelled at.
You might try spending some time training him. Nothing too drastic, or you will only make it worse. Don't startle him when he's sleeping. It's a natural response many dogs have. It's comes from when they were wild and slept in packs.

Chihuahuas are naturally protective, mine acts the same way I have to put him somewhere to answer the door because he actually grabs pant legs. Being firm with him and telling him NO is a good start.I would hate to see you have him put down too because I'm a chihuahua lover,Have upir family members give him treats it's not rewarding his behavior but actually in an attempt to gain his trust,Also let him come to other people he might feel more secure if it is on "his terms" rather than being forced to socialize. As for nipping when he's woke up he is doing that out of reflex Always let him sleep when he needs to because like humans dogs can be grouchy when woke up

My son has a chihuahua [5 lbs] and he is the same way. He finds that when Muttley is having his tantrums if he kennels him for 15 minutes or so, he calms down. It is important to note, they are usually a 1 person dog.

Seek a trainer/behaviorist. If he is acting this way, obviously he has been allowed to develop this beastly little attitude and your family needs to be trained to train him.
This is serious!!!! This viciousness must NOT be tolerated! What if he were a large dog? I despise double standards between little and large dogs. Dogs are dogs.

Your dog thinks he is the boss. He could benefit from a dog training class, so he can learn commands and learn that you are the boss, not him. This will help him cool it. Also, if he's not neutered, neuter him. You are going to have to be very firm with him that biting is not OK. But training classes will help a lot.
