Here are some options:
1. Use a food processer, on CHOP mode.
2. Chop quickly.
3. Try storing onions is cooler. The low temperatures in the fridge change the enzymes in the onions. So the gas released is not as intense. The longer the remain in the fridge the less chance of teary eyes if any at all.
4. Running a sliced onion under water (preferably cold). The gases need moisture. Ever notice those juices that come out of the onion when you slice it. If you run them under cold water, you can help to dilute these juice, ergo the gases.
5. Shield your eyes.
6. Soak the onion in water before chopping them.
7. Freeze the knife first before using it to chop the onion.
8. Try buying fresher onions...they get more potent as they get older. Cutting under running water helps if you are only cutting them in half or other large cuts...you can't mince an onion under running water. You might also try doing it by a window, try to air out the room a bit.
9. Don't breath through your nose when chopping onions, breath through your mouth.
10. Use red or spanish onions.
I hope that this helps... One of them is bound to work... I wanted to give you options and something to laugh at.

There are a few tricks but this combination usually works (without having to clench your teeth around a fork or hold a blown out matches stick in your mouth); Pre-soak the onion in water for a few minutes and when cutting be sure to leave the base intact. Cutting into the base is what makes our eyes water.

Cut them under running water! It's tricky, but it works!
(I never knew people actually had that problem until I had LASIK on my eyes, and wasn't wearing contact lenses- contacts keep your eyes from watering, mostly!!)
I usually cut the root and stem ends off so that the onion has two flat sides. The I cut it in half through the top - Then I lay the cut side down on the cutting board and slice it from there - it saves a lot of tears.

Well, sometimes I try this technique and works. Use cold onions, yes, put them in the fridge. Also use onions that don't have green layers, just white or yellow ones, the greener the onion, the more tears. Have a nice day.

The toxin that makes you cry works at room temperature. To avoid the problem, them in half really quick and stick them in the freezer or and ice water bath. After about 5 minutes you can cut tear-free.

Cut out the cone of the onion that's were the fumes are that make you cry. Or refrigerate for 30 min and it won't give off those strong fumes.

Don't ask me how these methods help, but a lot of people say that if you cut them by running water, like your kitchen sink, it will make it easier. If you are chewing gum while you are cutting them, then that will make it easier as well.
Don't you hate crying when you have nothing to cry about.

freeze them or
cut them under running water or
put vicks vapor rub under your nose.
I found that freezing them works best but if you are in a hurry use water to simply cut them up but if you need to slice or chop them where you need a cutting board then use the vapor rub.

i agree with sweet, i went to culinary school and that was the trick of all trades, don't talk when you cut onions!!! also, if you have onion juice on your hands, put lemon juice on them, wash them with it and it will take most of the smell away
