Why why why in this country are the polls made so difficult and poorly monitored. Also when only 30% of the population vote and 51% of that number decide the election you get 15% of the country deciding the outcome.
POLLING should be done at tax time you get a form with your W2 and you vote then and all who file vote.

Not long after 9/11 I looked up Literacy rates. At that time I was looking specifically at Afghanistan. Scary stuff folks.

Over time I looked at other sites and found that the Middle East, even the oil rich nations, have dismal numbers.

What does that have to do with THIS question.

I did not write down where this article was but was related to literacy and voting in the US.

The US reports a 98% rate. Pretty good right? The author gets into a discussion on "the functionally illiterate". She moves in the direction booman goes about completley uninformed people that can't balance a checkbook voting on issues they have "0" understanding of. She brought up sources of information some people use..like the self proclaimed "I know everything Uncle, Parent etc" Who is likely a narcasist and just making it up as they go.

So the bottom line according to this article is that 46% of the 98% are functionally illiterate. I say better they stay home.

Keeping our numbers in mind look up the stats of the rest of the planet and then apply your own perspective of how many in any particular location will be "functionally illiterate"

Or just look at many of the questions in the Politics section and get frightened.

The biggest problem is that the politicians decided on the voting reform. That 15% needs to be more vocal

Currently there is really no incentive to encourage voting. One side likes to discourage voting, while "get out the vote" measures never have a great follow through. Might be better to have voters names enters to collect the money from unclaimed lottery winnings. I think a measure was suggested in Arizona.

Secondly there has been too much energy spent on smear campaigns and mud-slining that voters are now forced to vote the lesser of two evils. Debates have become nothing more then a political red carpet event that has no bearing on voters decisions.

Most of todays voters are the Mtv generation which is more concerned and interested about clicks, consumerism, and sensationalism. And will often vote on weather they get a good vibe from a certain canidate

OMG! TV that educates... Hmmm I wish it were still true. Unfortunately, all the people in TV land now have opinions. Instead of just giving us the non-biased facts, we now have "tailored news." As for voting... well... I think once we get older, and we take a class in Government Social Sciences, we learn that the Electoral College actually votes in the new Prez. And then we learn about the times that the popular vote was for canidate A, but they picked canidate B anyway. Next we cry out in unfairness, then depression and acceptance, then realization that we are not exactly the free nation we thought we were. In further research, we realize that this electoral college was created because the tallying of votes via the pony express method took weeks, and wasn't very accurate. I can understand that. But now with all the technology, who needs the electoral college?!
So your answer is: THE DAY NO ONE VOTES AND A PREZ IS STILL CHOSEN, VOTING REFORM WILL FOLLOW! Muahahaha...

I am not so sure I want uninformed people forced to vote. Those that take the time to educate themselves about the issues and the candidates are the one's that show up at the polls. Although I agree it would be great if pwople in this country spent more time watching TV that educates them, rather than American Idol or Survivor!
