Rip out the carpet, paint, disinfect, bleach, febreeze, plug ins, clean clean clean...in time the smell goes away. You may want to also clean any wood with Murphys.

Take the smoker, and push him out the door. Then don't let him back in, ever. Eventually the smell will go away (it helps if you wash off the ubiquitous brown 'fur').

If you have carpets, get them cleaned. Wash everything that is washable like bedding, curtains pillow covers, and use Febreeze.
