I remember when China bought the old Soviet Carrier... Varyag, briefly named Riga back in 1997 or so.

I would be interested to see how long it would take the Chinese to come up with competent carrier pilots

Rather we want it or not, China is now a Superpower. More than Russia. They will be the dominating factor in SE Asia for along time. This is not their only advancement, they are on the path to pulling ahead of us in the space area too.

To answer your question, the Chinese will become much more belligerent in the South China Sea. Look for them to solidify their claim on the Spratley Islands as Vietnam and the Philippines have no naval assets that can match the Chinese. Filipinos will start to feel pretty foolish for kicking the United States out of bases in their country back in 1992.

China is also building a economy car plant in Mexico. They want to be the WallpopMart of high gas mileage autos for the USA market. BTW, Canada and China owns most of the $9 trillion in debt over the next ten years all ran up by Bush and Republicans in Congress.

China will probably try to keep indirect pressure on Taiwan. Taiwan will need to purchase more defense materiels from the US. This could cause more political tension between the US and China. Which of course will mean higher prices at Wal-Mart if there are any disruptions to Chinese-US trade.

I don't think any impact in reality. But alot of countries in that area are going to be concerned about the theoretical possibilities. Taiwan (which I do not regard as a country) and Japan are going to... basically whinge....about their saftey, but practically, China is merely advancing its defence and avaiation aspects. What is wrong with that in itself?

I don't understand why we in the US have to send money to China so they can build safe nuclear power plants. I mean they have tons more money than we do and they're making more money by selling arms to Iran. Why do they need our money?

It just makes no sense at all.

Not much. China is already an economic and military power. It will only increase their stature, in the world.
