Your birth certificate should give your mother's maiden name (the name she had before she ever married), and you should find it on her marriage license as well. If a relative doesn't have these records stashed away in a safe place and if you live in the United States, pay a visit to the county clerk in the county where you were born either on line or in person. Most states allow limited access to birth and marriage records on line, provided the searcher can prove his or her relationship.
