Because they have not done any reading on the topic at all; they vomit back pseudo-facts spewed from the mouths of ignoramuses on a pulpit.

It comes from the misunderstanding of evolution. Man did /not/ evolve from monkeys, rather, humans and apes share a common ancestor. What that means is, waaaaaay back in the day there was ancestor x. Ancestor x evolved into, say, two groups: ancestor y and z. They then evolved into apes and humans. (Something along those lines, I can't promise perfection there for I've only had one small course in a high school biology class.)
It's often so hard to imagine, I think, because it so blatantly opposes old stories of creation. While other theories and religion can coexist, evolution cannot be intermingled with the creationist thoughts- not without a great stretch, anyway.

They forget a very small but very important word. The word is "sea".
We all evolved from Sea Monkeys.
Look at the link below. There are pictures of Sea Monkeys. You'll immediately notice the human resemblance.

Because evolution can be poorly taught and hence poorly understood.
Pictures, powerpoints, newspaper articles, the internet - a myriad of potentially misleading information.
If they really want to know the completely what evolution is, they should go to the science department and ask the head of biology.

Many people want to believe that they're greater than what they actually are. The humbling idea of being something less than ones expectations can lead to delusional behavior and megalomania. It can also be a trial to allow a person to strive to be something greater than what they are.

You are, of course, quite right. Some people simply don't understand enough about evolution to see how it works. -- Make that a LOT of people.

I would have to assume that our schools suck.
And actually that thinking would lead to a single species.
