I have spoken to many Atheists, I have spent time as one. I was wondering on this divide in views.
Do you see religion as a, once necassary political tool used to control the masses and moderate the developement of society, that has ceased to bear necessity as time has passed therefore now obselite.
Or a complete fantasy and falicy that has never benefited humanity in any way?
Or just freely express you individual view.

A complete fantasy and fallacy that has never benefited humanity in any way...that continues to be used as a political tool to control the masses and impede the development of society.

Religion started off as fantasy. Primitives felt an earthquake or suffered from a flood. Why was that? Because they decided that there is a higher being with magical powers punishing them for something or trying to send a message.
This persisted over the years, and the people in power saw that this belief could be used as a weapon, so they started using to line their pockets and keep the masses under thumb. Where do you think the crusades came from, or why Protestants broke off?

Total fantasy that was used as a political tool. The harm its caused outweighs the benefits.

Personally...
All people once lived a tribal life, all tribes of people had their stories, both for entertainment and as lessons that taught the values of their people. Along with that, being as how humans are smart and curious, but with an easy fear of what we don't understand, all tribes had their creation stories, the stories that became a belief as to how and why. I mean, these are people who couldn't even understand stars and clouds...so they had their own beliefs of what they were.
Those kinds of stories naturally eventually became belief systems and religions.

Fantasy and fallacy . More wars, executions, and murders have been done in the name of religion than can be counted. If no supestition ever took hold, the world would have been much better off.

I see religion as ancient man's attempt to understand his world. Today, science has better explanations for our reality than religion. Religion can still be of some use in a moral sense, but it does not "corner the market" on morality.
I personally have no use for religion.

I see it as a social control that is now no longer necessary. It was a way for the educated, who were small in number, to control a large, superstitious, illiterate mass population.
However, the masses are now educated which means that this is obsolete.
