Has anyone ever used the 'Nothing to declare' aisle in an airport? What exactly does it mean? What can you get through if only you declare it? I am Not a terrorist. I was thinking along the lines of Cigarettes. If you are allowed to bring home 16 cartons of cigs and you bring 20 cartons, can you get them through if you declare them.

I am only using the ciggies as an example. I now understand that if I was to bring home more then I would just have to pay Tax on them. Am I right in thinking that.

Find out the limit for cigarettes and liquor and stick to it. If you bring more then you should go through the declare channel and tell the customs officer who will calculate the duty only on the excess which you have to pay up. If you are caught going through the nothing to declare then you will have to pay the duty and a fine.

I always us the nothing to declare aisle and have yet to be checked. I am older and generally well dressed and really, I usually have nothing to declare. However; I don't think that the extra 4 cartons of ciggies is worth getting put on the watch list. Use your common sense here. Small things can lead to BIG problems.

The nothing to declare lane is for people who don't exceed the customs limit. In most places, they should let some alcohol and cigarettes through. But if you bring more than the limit, you should go through the declare lane, otherwise you could get a fine for not declaring. also, it could be the quarantine lane. In that case, cigarettes usually dont need to be quarantined.

NOOOOOOO..... You can only bring what you are ALLOWED or else it will be confiscated if you are checked. It's a pain in the a** to be searched at the airport. Took me almost 2 hours when I brought in some tulip bulbs from the Netherlands that were approved for import/export. And, if you are young there is a good chance you'll be searched. Don't know where you are going but to and from Jamaica is customary for anyone but older people or people in nicer looking clothes. The UK also does a lot of searches.

if you use the Green lane (i dont know if you americans use a green and red lane. Green is NTD, red is for things to declare), and you are found to have items that must be declared or have to pay duty for, you can be fined and your passport put on a global database (only used in 66 countries) and put on warning......thats what happens in Australia and I imagine that what happens in the USA as well as you guys have similar laws.
