Don't know much about Thai food. All I have heard is it's noodly, ricey, basically Chinese food with heat and spice. Have researched a place that gets good reviews from locals but have no idea what the best "starter" food would be that just about any decent Thai place should have? Pad Thai? They have no online menu (nor website) so I'm clueless.

I could just wander in and say 'what's your best seller?' and get served a plate of phrik khii nuu or mang dah (giant fried waterbugs) while the cooks get lots of lol's. As much fun as that FearFactor dining would be I'd like to get some ideas of traditional faves from the western palet?
Thanks.

Wow love the Yahoo Answers community! Since this is very vague and subjective there is no way I can choose the best answer. All are good even the Tae Kwan Do answer, [You forgot the Creme of Sumyung-gai :p]. The community will decide the best one. I and much of the community will benefit from all of your great answers.
Thanks again!

"Phrik khii nuu" is Thai Chili and "mang dah" is a Thai delicacy which is used in chili paste. They are not for eating by themselves. You must have offended the chef in some ways to be served those dishes. Or, perhaps you were trying to woo the waitress who is the chef's daughter, so they pulled your legs!

Thai food is very different from Chinese food even though rice and noodles are common for both food. You do not say French food is like American food just because both are served with bread. And you do not say Korean food is Japanese food with garlic and spice.

For starters, if you'd like to try curry, start with yellow curry (Karee curry.) If you like noodles, try Pad Thai. For soup, try Tom Yum or Tom Kha. If you like stir-fried food, try one of the basil dishes.

Hope this helps!

Pad see yew

Not sure of the spelling, but that's the phonetic pronunication. It rocks. It's wide, flat rice noodles, usually with a choice of meat (chicken, beef, etc.).

Pad prik king is also good, though more spicy.
Masamun curry is good if you like richer types of dishes.

Pad thai is to Thai food what California rolls are to sushi--a great start for beginners.

I also enjoy vegetable curry.

Also, summer rolls are a light, fresh alternative to (fried) spring rolls.

Pad Thai is delicious. It has a peanut sauce and peanuts sprinkled on top. Try it with chicken or shrimp.

thai food is the BEST, it kicks chinese food's *** especially if you enjoy spicy food.

anything with peanut sauce is a favorite of mine, as well as pad thai. if you like sweet try the pad thai, if you like spicy then try a spicy peanut sauce dish (pra ram chicken or somesuch).

you will like it, enjoy!
