i have an HDTV without a tuner in it. i was thinking i could buy a cheap VCR and plug my cable into it. This seems kind of silly and I am sure there is a better option but I can't find one that is cheap and easy. Any recommendations?

Oh, yeh, sure, if your TV doesnt have a tuner in it, a VCR's tuner would work fine. That would probabaly be the cheapest option for getting basic analog tv.

However, you will not get HD that way. And if you cant get HD from your cable company (why?), then you have to get it over-the-air with an antenna. You need a digital ATSC tuner for that. There are settop boxes that will do this. Currently they are few and far between, and are expensive. I've seen them for about $100 at some electronics stores. Here's an example: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882107049 (dont know if i would buy that, but thats just an example of what you would need).

All TVs have a tuner. Else they may well be a visual show unit. All TVs made interior the previous 15 years or so, can track analog cable from channel a million to one hundred twenty five. The previous 3 years or so, they probable can track sparkling QAM cable. extra advantageous than likey you have a concern with your cable (no longer different than for they might are starting to be rid of a few channels from the what container-much less TVs and tuners can acquire), or the television may well be defective.

You could use a VCR, but your reasons for not taking the best way (cable box) don't make any sense.

You can rent an HD cable box from your cable company which gives composite and DVI output which will give you a HD image without a tuner.
