predicting the apacolypse has been going on since Nero was throwing Christians to the lions, every turn of the Century, every end of the millenia, the 7th Day Adventists had their day in 1912, the Jim Jones cult and wacko in Waco both had their days, every passing of Haley's comet, eclipse of the sun and other end-of earth prophesies that i'm sure i missed. One thing you can be sure of, the arsenals of the US and Russia can obliterate a million Hiroshimas.....anyway, sleep tight.

Why that day?

Okay, so I read on the link someone posted below. Seems pretty neat to me, like that things are suppose to be good after this day.

What I want to know is this: How did they Mayan's count their years? I mean it says they wrote all this stuff in 3118 (or whatever year) B.C. That is BEFORE CHRIST!

So how did they count their years? And when was it that they decided there were 365 1/4 days in a year? Yes I know that's how long it takes the earth to get around the sun and we make up for the 1/4 year on leap year. But when was this "discovered?"

And when did we start counting the years in A.D. (AFTER DEATH)? I'm sure it wasn't 1 year from Jesus' death, but at some point it was done.

I guess what I'm saying is, how do we know it's really 2007 and that the year 2012 isn't sooner or hasn't already past us?

I also think it's amazing with all the arguments and disagreements about religion that most of the world counts it's years in A.D.

The mayan's didn't say that. Though it can be interpreted that way. What they said is that is the end of their calender and the end of the 5 epochs of time (for lack of the word they used.) They certainly predicted it would mark a cataclysmic change.

Just me. The answers to your questions are also on that page. The mayan calender has nothing to do with the julian calender (that we use). The date above is taken from the Mayan calender which is accurate to 1 day in 380,000 years and then "translated" if you will onto our calender.

They set their calender to have a start date that corresponds to our 3118 BC though that is not when they made their calender. It was already almost 3500 years later when they started it. Interestingly, that (3118 BC on our calender) marks a great flood in their mythology.

Our calender is in fact quite subjective. The first generation of it was I believe used around a century after Jesus's death which would have been approximately 30 or 33 AD (year of our lord, anno dominum ?sp?). In those early calenders there were only 360 days (just like the current muslim calender), later changed to 365 and then to 365 1/4.

In the end, *our* calenders are merely a means of recording and scheduling events. Theirs was as well, but the events it was tied to are astonomical events of the galaxy as opposed to the original month, tied to the lunar cycle. In other words, you are correct in suggesting that it hasn't been 2007 years since Christ was born, because of all those years that the year was shorted by 5 1/4 days. The Mayan calender however made adjustments for a 365 1/4 day year though the use of "non" days.

They knew the solar system rotated in the galaxy rather than that everything revolved around the flat earth as most of the world believed.

E FN: You are correct that many have predicted doomsday BUT regardless of that, one must consider the accuracy of the mayan calender. It is totally amazing that their calenders (they had 5 for different reasons that corresponded with the others) are so accurate and accounted for the lunar cycle, the solar cycle, the cycle of venus, eclipse cycle, that they understood not only the rotation of the earth around the sun, but also the rotation of the solar system in the galaxy.

The accuracy of prophecy is most easily seen in a historical context and by the vagueness of it.

But the Mayans in the 9th century knew enough astronomy to set their calender to end during a period that coincided with a galatic event of enormous consequence.

What is the significance of all that? Good question and certainly worthy of study. They were an amazingly intelligent and knowledgeable society of whom we know too little. Then again, we're also learning that the Greeks and Romans were much more advanced than recent history have given them credit for. It seems the "dark ages" removed much of the collective knowledge. And just as the islamic destruction of the the libraries of Egypt and Greece played a part in that loss so did the Spanish priests in their destruction of Mayan texts prevent us from understanding more of that society.

I think this question falls under the "Idiotic Conspiracy Theories" category.

People said the same thing about the Millenium. SHOCK! HORROR! Y2K is coming.

We're still alive aren't we?

i do not know....i want to try to be ready every day...i know that Heavenly Father has a plan for me but I do not know what the plan is...so, be ready like if it is today your day and do not date any event in your life, it only limits you.
